Testimonials

At The Scholar’s Chess Guild, our greatest success comes from the experiences of the students, parents, and schools we serve. Here’s what our community has to say about how our chess programs have inspired confidence, sharpened focus, and brought joy to learning.

Erin Miller:

Head of School

"The Scholars Chess Guild at St. Thomas Aquinas Academy has become a much-anticipated highlight of the week for many students. There’s something special about seeing children ages 5 to 12 gathered around the chessboard learning, competing, and enjoying the game together. The atmosphere is both lively and focused, as students challenge one another in matches that spark critical thinking and friendly rivalry.

Coach Ryan is at the heart of the Guild’s success. His approach is hands-on and encouraging; he not only teaches strategy but also plays alongside the students, offering guidance that is both accessible and inspiring. His presence creates a space where students feel supported, engaged, and motivated to grow.

What stands out most is the sense of community and enthusiasm for the game. The Guild fosters not just chess skills, but confidence, patience, and respect among players. It’s clear the students aren’t just learning to play, they’re learning to love the game."

“I enjoy coaching chess because the learning process can completely transform how a student sees the game and themselves. To me, chess is more than just a board game; it’s a way to think differently and to understand how every small choice connects. Watching someone go from playing random moves to building strategy and confidence in their own decisions is what made me want to teach.”

Darcy Merilan:
Coach

“I love teaching chess because it allows us to learn about strategies and thinking one step ahead for what we plan on doing next. When I teach my students chess, I get to relate to them in multiple ways and allow them to learn for themselves, and see how they can move around and make strategies for  themselves.”

Ryan Harrell:
Coach

“The best part of teaching chess has been the time spent with the kids. Their energy, curiosity, and humor make every session memorable, and I’ve loved getting to share the game with them in a way that feels fun and meaningful.”

Jacob Lamothe:
Coach

“Teaching with The Scholar’s Chess Guild has been a blast so far! Students learn the fundamentals of chess, such as how to set up the board, how each piece moves, and how to develop plans to position the pieces in a comfortable starting position. We use mini-games, specific challenges, and real-life analogies to really hammer home different concepts like “castling” and “pawn-promotions.”

The most rewarding part of the experience for me so far has been seeing how curiously, creatively, and enthusiastically the students approach class each week. Having the opportunity to share my passion for the game of chess has been a dream come true, and I look forward to watching the students continue to grow in their skills and confidence!”
